Plastic pollution in riverbeds fundamentally affects natural sand transport processes

چکیده
Abstract Over the past 50 years, rivers have become increasingly important vectors for plastic pollution. Lowland riverbeds exhibit coherent morphological features including ripple and dune bedforms, which transport sediment downstream via well-understood processes, yet impact of on mechanics is largely unknown. Here we use flume tank experiments to show that when particles are introduced sandy riverbeds, even at relatively low concentrations, novel bedform morphologies altered processes emerge, irregular stoss erosion “washout”, causing topographic amplitudes decline. We detail (i) new mechanisms incorporation in riverbed dunes, (ii) how sedimentary fundamentally influenced. Our laboratory suggest not a passive component river systems but directly affects bed topography locally increases proportion sand suspended water column, larger scales, has potential ecosystems wider landscapes. The resulting distribution heterogeneous, highlighting challenge representatively sampling concentrations sediments. insights part an ongoing suite efforts contributing establishment branch process sedimentology: – interactions.

Marine birds and plastic pollution
The intrinsic properties and widespread presence of plastic particles in the marine environment have profound effects on birds inhabiting the world's oceans. Industrial and user-plastics composed of polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, styrofoam, and polyvinyl chloride are the most prevalent forms of plastic marine pollution. Their dispersal and accumulation, in average densities of 1000 t...
متن کاملSand transport on Mars
Whether the winds of the present Mars are shaping the variety of dune forms observed on the Martian surface has remained an open question that challenged planetary scientists for decades. In order to elucidate this issue, we have studied sand transport and dune formation from two different points of view. The first approach consists of solving the equations of aeolian transport at the level of ...
متن کاملProcesses in microbial transport in the natural subsurface
This is a review of physical, chemical, and biological processes governing microbial transport in the saturated subsurface. We begin with the conceptual models of the biophase that underlie mathematical descriptions of these processes and the physical processes that provide the framework for recent focus on less understood processes. Novel conceptual models of the interactions between cell surf...
متن کاملDistribution and Modeled Transport of Plastic Pollution in the Great Lakes, the World's Largest Freshwater Resource
Most plastic pollution originates on land. As such, freshwater bodies serve as conduits for the transport of plastic litter to the ocean. Understanding the concentrations and fluxes of plastic litter in freshwater ecosystems is critical to our understanding of the global plastic litter budget and underpins the success of future management strategies. We conducted a replicated field survey of su...
